Dog harnesses
How to find a suitable harness for your dog?
A perfectly fitting chest harness should be part of the basic equipment of every dog. Make sure that the harness fits perfectly, but is not too tight. However, the harness must also not be too loose, so that your dog cannot free themselves from the harness and endanger themselves and others. The material should be light and comfortable to wear for the dog. The fasteners should be sturdy and secure.
UFor most harnesses, the sizes are determined by the chest circumference of the dog. Measure the chest circumference behind the front legs at the broadest part of the chest. Should your dog turn out to have an intermediate size, choose the larger size, so that your dog has sufficient freedom of movement. The detailed size table may be found here.
Our product range offers a classic H-harness, which is individually adjustable and can grow along with puppies, a comfortable Y-harness, which can perfectly balance the pressure due to a padded chest plate, when the dog pulls on the leash; a panic harness for easily frightened dogs with a third escape-proof strap as well as an easy to put on Norwegian harness. Please not that our harnesses are not certified safety harnesses for car transports.
Collar versus harness – what is better?
If your dog tends to pull on the leash a lot, a harness can be the preferable alternative to a collar, because the pressure caused by the pull will be distributed among the entire chest and back and not affect solely the sensitive neck area. For if too much pressure is exerted on the cervical vertebrae and the larynx, this might negatively affect your dog's health as a worst case scenario.
For dogs with diseases of the spine or the locomotor system, using a chest harness is generally advisable, even if the dog does not pull at the leash. The same applies to very small dogs. A harness is also the better alternative for them. Furthermore, puppies should use a harness at least in the beginning, because young dogs tend to be bursting with energy and thus tend to pull on the leash. Furthermore, their leash training often hasn't been completed yet.
Another important factor is safety. For example, if you need to quickly grab and hold on to your dog, it is much easier and more comfortable to grab the harness rather than the collar. The same applies to hikes in difficult terrain. If your dog needs help, grabbing them by the harness is much more comfortable.
Regardless which harness you choose, always make sure that it fits your dog well. After all, your dog is supposed to be comfortable in the harness and not impeded in their range of motion.
A brief guide to harnesses – the guide harness for dogs
The guide harness is the classic among dog harnesses and very popular because of its many possibilities of adjustment. Guide harnesses are divided into so-called H-harness and Y-harness. The H-harness consists of a backstrap, two which two loops are attached (one loops goes around the lower neck, the other around the chest of the dog) and a strap
The layout of the Y-harness is similar to that of the H-harness. The main different is the softly padded chest plate, which perfectly balances the pull on the leash. A Y-harness also has many adjustment possibilities, which guarantee a perfect fit.
Panic or safety harnesses for easily frightened dogs
If your dog is easily startled or frightened, which often happens with rescue dogs who have sadly had a lot of bad experiences over the course of their life, a panic harness is the right solution. Because frightened or panicked dogs can be a danger to themselves and others. During a panic attack your dog might slips our of the harness due to a sudden move backwards. However, an additional third belly strap prevents your dog from freeing themselves from their harness during a panic attack or escape attempt. We offer our so-called No Escape harnesses in our Professional.
The right harness for dogs with a broad chest such as pugs or bulldogs
The stature of a pug or a bulldog is different from other dog breeds due to their broad chest. This often makes it difficult for dog owners to find a suitable harness. However, it is part of our philosophy to offer products that are suitable for any size and breed of dog. Therefore, we also offer harnesses suitable for pugs and bulldogs. And so the Professional Harness for Pugs & Co, the Professional Comfort Harness as well as the Active Pro Harness offer a perfect fit.
Which harness is suitable for my puppy?
A harness helps your puppy to adjust to the leash without putting undue strain on the sensitive neck. Because young dogs can be very boisterous and full of energy and therefore tend to pull on the leash.
Puppies grow fast, therefore you should choose a harness that is as flexible and adjustable as possible and can grow with the puppy. We would recommend our Professional Harness. Make sure to check regularly, if the harness has grown too tight. The harness should never cut into the body.
