Dog Clothing for Dogs with a Wide Chest

Pugs, French and English Bulldogs, as well as other compactly built dogs, often require a dog jacket with a special fit. Regularly cut dog clothing can be too tight in the chest area, even though the back length fits generally. Choosing a larger size may result in the jacket being too long at the back.

The WOLTERS dog clothing in the "Wide Chest" cut takes these special proportions into account. The models offer more room at the chest, neck, and belly while maintaining a suitable back length. This allows the clothing to fit snugly without unnecessarily constricting the muscular upper body.

Dog Jackets for Pugs, Bulldogs, and Similar Body Shapes

The "Wide Chest" cut is particularly suitable for pugs, French Bulldogs, English Bulldogs, and comparably built mixed breeds. Other dogs with a strong chest, wide neck, and compact back length can also benefit from this fit.

However, the breed alone does not determine the right cut. Body structure and measurements can vary significantly even within a breed. Always measure your dog carefully and compare back length, chest girth, and neck size with the measurement chart of the respective model.

If your dog has a strong chest but also a particularly long back, it needs to be checked which fit better takes its individual proportions into account.

Why is a Special Fit for a Wide Chest Useful?

For dogs with a strong chest, the chest circumference often exceeds the value specified for a comparable back length in the regular cut. A normal dog jacket can therefore be tight around the chest, neck, or belly.

If the jacket is too tight, it can hinder the natural movement of the front legs or rub under the armpits. Fasteners can be under tension, and the fabric may pull forward or to the side while walking.

However, an oversized regular jacket is also not a suitable solution. It may extend beyond the base of the tail, stick out on the sides, or shift during walks. A specially tailored cut brings back length and chest circumference into better alignment.

Rain Jackets for Dogs with a Wide Chest

A lightweight rain jacket protects your dog in wet and windy weather without adding heavy insulation. This can be particularly useful in mild temperatures and changeable weather.

Selected WOLTERS rain jackets are available in the "Wide Chest" cut and can be adjusted at the neck, belly, or back hem depending on the model. A sufficiently wide chest area ensures a comfortable fit and allows the front legs space for natural movement.

When selecting, pay attention to the waterproofing details. Water-repellent materials are suitable for different weather conditions than waterproof jackets with a membrane and specified water column.

Warm Winter Jackets for Pugs and Bulldogs

Padded winter jackets provide additional protection in low temperatures, cold wind, and winter moisture. Whether your dog needs a warm jacket depends on fur structure, undercoat, age, health condition, activity level, and outside temperature.

A winter jacket for dogs with a wide chest should provide enough space at the upper body without hanging loosely. The material should not pinch or rub, especially around the neck, shoulders, and behind the front legs.

Observe your dog during walks. Shivering, a tense body posture, or a desire to turn around quickly may indicate that they are cold. Heavy panting or restlessness may indicate that the clothing is too warm.

Dog Sweaters for a Wide Chest

A dog sweater can be a lighter alternative to a padded jacket on dry and cool days. Soft and form-fitting knit material conforms to the body and is particularly suitable for dogs that need additional warmth but do not require strong weather protection.

Even with an elastic sweater, the size must match the body shape. The chest must not be constricted and the leg openings should provide enough freedom of movement. A high roll collar should fit comfortably without putting pressure on the neck.

In rain or wet snow, a knitted sweater usually does not provide sufficient protection from moisture on its own. For such weather conditions, a suitable rain or winter jacket is the better choice.

How to Measure a Dog with a Wide Chest

For the right size choice, you mainly need back length and chest circumference. Depending on the garment, neck size should also be taken into account. Use a flexible tape measure and measure your dog in a straight standing position.

The back length is measured from the shoulder blades to the base of the tail. The tape measure should run straight down the back. The clothing must not end sharply before the base of the tail or extend beyond it.

Measure the chest circumference behind the front legs at the widest point of the chest. Place the tape measure close to the body without pulling it tight. For robustly built dogs, this measurement is particularly important as it determines the choice between regular and "Wide Chest" cuts.

Also measure the neck size if it is specified in the measurement chart. Particularly for dogs with a wide neck, the entry or collar must provide sufficient space.

What Size is Correct for Different Measurements?

Always compare the measured back length and chest circumference together with the size chart. Do not automatically choose a larger regular size just because the jacket is too tight at the chest. This can lead to it being too long in the back and losing its fit.

If the back length is within a size while the chest circumference exceeds the regular range, the "Wide Chest" cut may be more suitable. However, exact measurements can vary from model to model.

If your dog is between two sizes, movement freedom should be particularly taken into account. At the same time, the jacket must not fit so loosely that it shifts while running.

How Dog Clothing Fits Properly for a Wide Chest

A properly fitting dog jacket sits snugly on the body without putting pressure on the chest, neck, or belly. Your dog must be able to walk, sit, and lie down normally. The front legs should have freedom of movement, and the leg openings must not rub under the armpits.

After putting it on, check whether the fasteners can close securely without pulling the fabric tightly together. There should be enough space between the neck or chest and the clothing for comfortable movement and breathing.

Observe your dog during the first walks. A stiff gait, frequent stopping, scratching at the clothing, or attempting to shake it off may indicate an unsuitable size or fit.

Dog Jackets for Harness Wearers

Many WOLTERS dog jackets have a closable opening at the back through which the lead can connect to the harness worn underneath. This allows your dog to wear their usual harness under the jacket.

Ensure that the harness fits correctly under the clothing and is not shifted or additionally constricted by the fabric. The jacket’s opening should sit directly above the lead ring.

Before each walk, check that the harness, lead, fasteners, and lead ring are securely connected. The zipper opening in the jacket does not replace the need to check the harness worn underneath.

Suitable Clothing for Different Weather Conditions

A lightweight rain jacket without heavy insulation is suitable for mild rainy days. On cool days, a knitted sweater or lightly insulated outdoor jacket may be sensible. For cold and wet winter days, thicker insulated winter jackets are available.

Consider not only the outside temperature but also the wind, precipitation, duration of the walk, and your dog's activity level. A dog that moves a lot generates more body heat than a dog that frequently stops or walks slowly.

Take the clothing off in heated interiors. Otherwise, heat can build up quickly under padded jackets and sweaters.

Properly Clean and Care for Dog Clothing

Remove light dirt after walks with a damp cloth or a soft brush. Always follow the care instructions of the respective product for a thorough cleaning.

Close Velcro and zippers before machine washing. Many WOLTERS dog jackets and dog sweaters can be cleaned on a gentle cycle. However, the permissible temperature and suitable detergent may vary depending on the material.

Let the clothing dry completely in the air. Regularly check seams, fasteners, elastic bands, poppers, and leash openings for visible damage.
